Sinopsis: Trisha, la madre de Edward (Ed) y Alphonse (Al) Elric, muere de una enfermedad cuando ambos son niños. Ed tiene un gran talento para la alquimia y decide hallar un modo de resucitarla usando la alquimia, sin embargo, la transmutación humana es una ciencia prohibida. Por intentarlo, Ed y Al pagaron un enorme precio: Ed perdió su pierna izquierda en el proceso y Al perdió su cuerpo, obligando a su hermano a sacrificar también su brazo derecho para mantenerlo a duras penas existiendo y sellar el alma de Al en una gran armadura.

Tras ello, más decididos todavía a aprender la transmutación humana (esta vez para recuperar el cuerpo físico de Al y las extremidades de Ed), ambos hermanos se marchan para hacerse Alquimistas nacionales. Su destino final es hallar la Piedra Filosofal, una misteriosa gema que se dice que es capaz de bordear las reglas estándar de la alquimia y su principio de los estados equivalentes: ""El hombre no puede tener nada sin dar primero algo a cambio, para tener, algo de igual valor debe perderse; esta es la primera ley de la alquimia, la equivalencia de intercambio"
